The Al Hirschfeld Foundation celebrates Pride Month with its latest online exhibition, “Hirschfeld’s Drag Show,” now live at AlHirschfeldFoundation.org/exhibitions through August 15. The special guest curator for the exhibition is Tony-nominated playwright, actor, director, novelist and drag legend, Charles Busch.The new exhibition celebrates some of the greatest drag performances of stage and screen, as seen through the eyes of legendary artist Al Hirschfeld.
Six-time Tony Award Winner Audra McDonald will return to Broadway this fall, taking on what is widely regarded as the greatest role in musical theatre, “Rose” in GYPSY. This upcoming revival will be directed by the legendary five-time Tony Award-winning Director George C. Wolfe. GYPSY features a book by Tony Award Winner Arthur Laurents, music by Tony and Academy Award Winner Jule Styne, and lyrics by Tony, Grammy, Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize Winner Stephen Sondheim. The choreography will be by four-time Tony Award nominated Camille A. Brown. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date. The award-winning musical parody of Broadway shows and stars has found a new home for its latest edition Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song,at Theater555 on West 42nd Street. Previews begin on August 23rd with an opening slated for Thursday, September 12th. The show is produced by John Freedson, Harriet Yellin and Eric Krebs. Created, written and directed by Gerard Alessandrini, with musical staging by Gerry McIntyre, Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song skewers the latest deluge of Broadway offerings including Hell’s Kitchen, Stereophonic, The Outsiders, The Great Gatsby, Back to the Future, The Wiz, andof course, Merrily We Roll Along. In addition, there willbe sendups of Roger Bart, Patti LuPone, Daniel Radcliffe, Ariana DeBose and Jeremy Jordan, among others. This up-to-the-minute version will also poke fun at the 2024 Tony Awards, and will include some of the most popular numbers from Alessandrini’s recent Forbidden Sondheim.
