The Off Broadway Alliance, the organization of Off Broadway producers, theaters, general managers, press agents, and marketing professionals, presented the 6th annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards reception on Tuesday, June 21 at Sardi’s.
Honorees were on hand to receive their awards; the incredible Lois Smith and theatrical press agent Merle Debuskey (presented by Philip Birsh); Director David Saint (Clever Little Lies) had some very humorous stories to offer (great backstage gossip) especially about Anne Meara, and presented awards to her children Ben Stiller and Amy Stiller, and to Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach’s three children Roberta, Peter and Katherine (see the video for more).
Elizabeth Swados was posthumously inducted into the Off Broadway Hall of Fame. There were many heart-warming and illuminating acceptance speeches that riveted the audience as President and host Peter Breger made the introductions.
Honorees included producers and casts from all of this year’s winners: Best New Musical, Futurity (The Lisps); Best New Play, Exit Strategy; Best Musical Revival, The Robber Bridegroom; Best Play Revival, The School for Scandal; Best Unique Theatrical Experience, Sense & Sensibility; Best Solo Performance, James Lecesne, The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey; and Best Family Show, The Pirate La Dee Da.
The OBA awards honor outstanding achievement in Off Broadway theatre for the 2015 – 2016 season.
