From Union Hall in L.A. to London, and around the world, the 93rd Oscars, socially distanced, presented a lot of glitches. Producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins seemed to have missed a few beats as the always far too long Oscars that usually ended with Best Picture didn’t! Instead it was the first of the big three, followed by Best Actress Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and a Best Actor Award to Anthony Hopkins (The Father), who wasn’t there to accept with presenter Joaquin Phoenix awkwardly having the last word. Huh?
As always, there were highs and lows and a few surprises. The high. . . Nomadland director Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win Best Director. The biggest low was Chadwick Boseman not winning Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
