Theater Review by Yani Perez . . . .
The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit is back this season, presenting the bilingual musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, adapted, directed and choreographed by Rebecca Martínez with music and translations by Julián Mesri.
The story revolves around two sets of identical twins: Egeon had twin sons, both named Antipholus. He also bought another set of twins, both named Dromio, to serve as their servants. A shipwreck separated Egeon, one of his sons (Antipholus of Ephesus), and one servant (Dromio of Ephesus) from his wife and the other twins (Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse). The Antipholuses are played by Joél Acosta and their servants; the Dromios are both played by Gían Pérez.
Years later, the grown-up Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse arrive in Ephesus. They are unaware that their identical twins, Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus, live there. This is where the fun begins. The Syracusans are repeatedly mistaken for their Ephesian counterparts. The Syracusans encounter Ephesians who think they are familiar, leading to wrongful accusations, beatings, arrests, and romantic entanglements. The twist in this version is the inclusion of Spanish and Spanglish, along with references to Latinx culture, adding a unique richness and layer to this classic play. It’s a fresh take that showcases the universality of themes and cultures.
Prepare to be captivated by the cast’s energetic performances! Their dancing, humor, bilingual delivery, and overall demeanor bring the production to life. It’s no small task to play two characters, but Joél Acosta and Gían Pérez make it look effortless, showcasing their exceptional talent.
Experiencing this fun-spirited and free production in the open air of NYC is a true delight. Don’t miss this charming outdoor event—it’s a perfect way to enjoy Shakespeare in the city with a little Latinx flavor!
