Nervous brides, drunken toasts, awkward first dances: these are the stuff of ordinary weddings. But there’s nothing ordinary about the nuptials at the center of the brand new musical “It Shoulda Been You,” which begins previews on March 17 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre (in anticipation of an April 14 opening).

First seen at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, this tuner by Barbara Anselmi and Brian Hargrove — and directed by Hargrove’s award-winning multi-talented husband David Hyde Pierce — concerns the big day of beautiful Rebecca Steinberg (played by Sierra Boggess) and handsome Brian Howard (played by David Burtka). However, the differences in the two families’ religions turns out to be just one of the impediments to everyone finding a true “happily ever after”.

At a press event held at the swanky Pronovias bridal salon on East 52nd Street, the press got a glimpse of two of the show’s musical numbers – including “Nice” led by star Tyne Daly and ‘Perfect’ with Sierra Boggess and Lisa Howard. Theater Pizzazz then spoke to many members of the creative team and cast, which also includes Tony winner Harriet Harris, Montego Glover, Lisa Howard, Adam Heller, Chip Zien, Anne L. Nathan, Michael X. Martin, Josh Grisetti, and Nick Spangler. And not one of them let out the show’s big “secret” — which will be revealed in just a matter of weeks.
