By: Sandi Durell while “Making the Rounds with Russ”
The Metropolitan Room was alive and aglow not only with the spirit of the season, but jammed to the rafters with fans and friends in anticipation of a special late New Years Eve show and dinner with the marvelous Marilyn Maye. No one was disappointed!
The Biggest Party Ever began the moment Ms. Maye took the stage to thunderous applause because, well you know, it’s always a party when Marilyn’s around. She’s friskier and flirtier than ever, her vocals strong, powerful and poignant covering ground singing just about every song from that great American Songbook you know, love and can’t wait to hear. It was a “Golden Rainbow” of musical treasures that captured the hearts of her audience.
Floating effortlessly through upbeat swingin’ tunes “I Love to See You Smile” and “That Face,” there were clever mini-medleys only interrupted by her loving chats and double entendres that brought constant laughs and warmth. Cole Porter tunes “I Concentrate on You,” “I Get A Kick Out of You,” “Just One of Those Things” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” were stamped with the masterful arrangement style of musical director Billy Stritch on piano, with Tom Hubbard on bass and Daniel Glass on drums.
Two hours of non-stop fun and fabulous entertainment that culminated in bringing in 2015 in style! A special nod to the staff and to Bernie Furshpan, managing partner at the Metropolitan Room for creating a seamless evening of pleasure.
In the audience: Julie Wilson with Deborah Lynn, Joe Sirola, Jennifer Bassey
If you want to hear some of what I was treated to, Ms. Maye will be appearing at the Metropolitan Room starting January 2nd thru 10th in “Marilyn By Request” and, believe me, you’ll forget your troubles and just “Get Happy!”
