A new venture with old friends is the best way to describe the warm feeling and friendly reception of 54 Below’s latest offering, The Gospel Brunch. Bandleader Jeff Huart on piano and brainchild-host of the event, is multi-talent Rashad McPherson. The monthly Gospel Brunch features a revolving door of Broadway and TV/Film talent with voices that astonish. This modern spin on Gospel, usually known for aesthetic pleasure, both religious and ceremonial, feels less like church and more like an off-Broadway performance by some of the most memorable of voices.
The theme of this maiden voyage featured songs of the holiday season that are both staples in Gospel music like “Holy, Holy”, “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” featuring Carla Stewart, “Amazing Grace”, featuring Karena Robinson & Tynesia Hill), “O Come Emmanuel”, “Go Tell It on the Mountain” and other classics.
In the mix were songs by more familiar artists like Tina Turner (“Simply the Best”) sung by powerhouse Alexis Tidwell and Earth, Wind and Fire “Go Tell It on the Mountain”, that rocked the house.
Modern Gospel mixed with the perfect menu pairings by Chef James Klapak who spent a lot of creative energy to put together the yummy dishes you see on the menu. Congrats Chef Klapak! This is an afternoon that feels like an invite from your favorite celebrity. You instantly feel like part of something larger in an incredibly welcoming and inclusive environment.
