Thursday night, November 16, was the opening of MCC’s newest show School Girls: Or, The African Mean Girls Play, written by Jocelyn Bioh, and directed by Tony Award Winner Rebecca Taichman (Time and the Conways, Indecent). The show stars Nabiyah Be, MaameYaa Boafo, Paige Gilbert, Zainab Jah, Nike Kadri, Abena Mensah-Bonsu, Miriai Sithole, and Myra Lucretia Taylor.

Stars in attendance included Corey Hawkins, Adepero Oduye, Teyonah Parris, Okieriete Onaodowan, Lynn Nottage, Brandon Victor Dixon, Geneva Carr, Michael Greif, Condola Rashad, Alex Sharp, Sarah Stiles, Michael David Baldwin, Lauren F Walker, Jojo Brown, Micheal Lorz, Marky Irene Diven, Halle Sahar, and Jennifer Morrison.

What’s it about: Paulina, the reigning Queen Bee at Ghana’s most exclusive boarding school, has her sights set on the Miss Universe pageant. But the mid-year arrival of Ericka, a new student with undeniable talent and beauty, captures the attention of the pageant recruiter–and Paulina’s hive-minded friends. This buoyant and biting comedy explores the universal similarities (and glaring differences) facing teenage girls across the globe. How far would you go to be queen bee?
